Why GIS matters for climate resilience in East Africa
Spatial data turns climate risk from an abstract threat into something planners can see, map and act on.
Across the Greater Horn of Africa, climate risk is no longer an abstract forecast — it is flooded roads, failed harvests and displaced communities. What decides whether a warning becomes action is rarely the science alone; it is whether the people making decisions can see the risk on a map they trust.
From data points to decisions
Geographic information systems turn scattered observations — rainfall gauges, satellite passes, household surveys — into layers a planner can overlay and reason about. A drought index stops being a spreadsheet and becomes a shaded county; a river gauge becomes a flood-extent polygon creeping toward a settlement.

What good spatial data unlocks
When the underlying data is clean, current and openly served, three things change: early-warning moves from national bulletins to ward-level alerts; resources are pre-positioned where exposure is highest; and after an event, the same layers support transparent, evidence-based recovery.
None of this requires exotic technology. It requires disciplined data pipelines, open standards, and interfaces built for the analyst and the county officer — not just the specialist. That is the work we do every day.
